Jags are champions !!

Jewel Miners u14s Cup Final 2022
Dalkeith Thistle CFC v Leith Athletic

May 31st / Kick off 7pm

The Jags Jewel Miners Cup run started in January with a convincing 4-1 win against Gala followed by a 3-1 away victory against Spartans Blues in early March. That result set up a semi final against our close league rivals Tranent who were no match for our boys at Kings Park and our 4-0 win saw us reach our first ever final.

Easthouse Lilys ground was the final venue and Leith Athletic our opponents. This was our 5th game against them this season having won 3 of those, their only win coming in another Cup competition in January.

So, the stage was set, we knew what to expect from our opponents and it was no surprise that the game started at a typical cup final pace.

Play was fairly even for the first 25 minutes with neither keeper being troubled but after a long through ball in the 29th minute, Leith took the lead when their striker calmly finished past keeper Oliver McPheators.

That goal seemed to galvanise the Dalkeith boys who immediately tested the Leith keeper from the restart.

We didn't need to wait long for the equaliser which came from a Mikey Quinn corner in the 35th minute. The initial cross wasn't dealt with by the Leith keeper or defence and after a few half clearances, the ball was finally smashed into the net from close range by Lennon Fairgrieve leaving it all square at half time.

Dalkeith started the second half the stronger side and Leith responded by switching to a more defensive formation.

This led to the Leith defense being put under more pressure and it finally paid off when Rhys Nethery headed home a Keigan Wilson cross in the 57th minute to put the boys in front.

The final 12 minutes were hectic with Dalkeith trying to close out the game and they almost did when a Liam Borthwick 25 yard freekick which came back off the bar.

Leith were now throwing everything they had left at our defense. In the 68th minute it looked like they had equalised but an incredible full stretch save by keeper McPheators denied what looked like a certain goal as he tipped it past the post.

After what seemed an eternity, the ref finally blew the final whistle and the celebrations began.
